When a couple becomes mom and dad, for them a new beginning of life begins. From the day 1 of newborn they start taking care of every small bit , from feeding to clothes to what is best to play and so on….the list keeps going on….
Likewise when we grow we tend to give our parents everything that they might need to keep them happy, from financial security and medical facilities to all the affordable luxuries for them.
Health is so badly affected in their longest journey of struggles and achievements that they end up with many health problems, of which some could be resolved and some cant.
As we know old age is something which is incurable and non-preventable, so the best solution for this is “preventable geriatrics” that is preventing the diseases occurring in old age.
So there was a theme made in 2017,
“Add life to years and not years to life.”
The average life expectancy in the country has come to 67.5 years.
The major health problems in old age are:

- Neural deafness (40-50dB)
- Locomotory disabilities
- Emphysema
- Failure of special senses

- Detrusor instability (common cause of urgency and urge incontinence that is leakage while the patient is attempting to inhibit micturition)

- Accidents/Falls
Psychological:
- Mental changes
- Sexual adjustments
- Emotional changes
(Especially the people who have been working all through their life find it very difficult to sit ideal after retirement and makes them vulnerable)
For our elders, a program was launched by govt. of India in 1999 called NPOP (National Policy for Older Persons) which included:
- Old age homes
- Day care centers
- Vocational services to learn new skills
- Rehabilitation centers that includes physiotherapy.
India is having a demographic dividend population that means now the maximum population is in the economic zone but later on after 30-40 years this population will come under old age areas that time the country will face a big amount of dependent population, this would be called as demographic liabilities. So many programs are launched by the govt. of India like NPOP, Vyoshri yojana Etc.
As per the saying, “PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE”, we need to follow certain precautions for better health.
